Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
