Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to question particular decisions from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
